Ginseng

Ginseng is one of the most well-known herbs in traditional Chinese medicine.  The root is believed to be good for your lungs, strengthen your spleen and stomach, benefit your heart and calm your mind.  Due to these therapeutic properties, it is often used as an ingredient in several Chinese herbal formulas.

However, it is seldom, if ever ingested on its own.  Being a gastro-intestinal tonic herb, ginseng can cause internal body heat and give you a feeling of fullness in your chest and diaphragm.  It is normally combined with herbs that regulate your gastro-intestinal tract.  This prevents a build up of negative effects, which may damage, rather than benefit, your spleen and stomach.

How Many Types Of Ginseng Are There?

Ginseng should not be taken over long periods.   That may lead to headaches, high blood pressure and even insomnia.

There are  various types of ginseng, such as white ginseng, red ginseng (usually Korean), American ginseng and Siberian ginseng.  White ginseng is known for its neutral qualities, and is used as a general tonic.  Red or Korean ginseng, has strong, or hot properties. American ginseng is a mild tonic.

If you wish to take ginseng for any ailment, first have a word with your doctor.  If he raises no objections, consult a herbal practitioner.  If you have no major illnesses and intend to take ginseng for general health purposes, it's still advisable to first consult some herbal practitioner.

Is It A Miracle Herb?  You Decide

Ginseng is believed to have the following properties:

Toner

It relieves the effects of exhaustion, especially during examinations, long-distance driving, stage performances, athletic events or unusually strenuous physical work.

 Tonic

It is useful for convalescence from any disease.  It would help you cope with long-term exhaustion and to remove inferiority complexes.  It may be used to strengthen your body's resistance to illness as well.

Mental Benefits

It is deemed useful for those suffering from depression and/or insomnia.  Besides, the elderly could benefit from it, particularly as it is known to elevate their spirits and improve their general outlook on life.  Also, it may assist in improving their memory, concentration, alertness and learning abilities.

Good For Stress

If taken regularly, it may help the elderly with high blood pressure. Ginseng has been proved to bring about a small, but consistent, reduction in blood pressure.  However, before you take it, consult your doctor.
