Routine (Blood) Hematological Tests

Collection of Blood Blood is connective tissue.  It circulates in closed blood vessels in the system.  The circulating blood consists of erythrocytes (red blood cells), leucocytes (white blood cells), and platelets or thrombocytes in a pale yellow colored fluid called plasma.

When blood is given to a pathological lab for routine check up of blood CBC -- a complete blood count is performed.

 The following tests are done:

  1. Hemoglobin determination

  2. Total erythrocyte (RBC) count

  3. Total leucocyte (WBC) count

  4. Differential WBC count

  5. Platelets count

  6. Abnormalities of erythrocytes

  7. Abnormalities of leucocytes

  8. Parasites

When blood is given for a complete hemogram, the following tests are done in addition to the above tests:

  9. Packed Cell Volume (PCV)

  10. Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV)

  11. Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH)

  12. Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration
    (MCHC)

  13. Color index
