Would you like to discover an easy and available source of serenity and calm? Could you use a little help in handling the unavoidable stresses of modern life? Would you like to feel more positive and better able to cope? Reiki can help! Reiki is easy to learn, simple to use, and a joy to receive.

Reiki (pronounced ray–key) is a Japanese word that means universal life energy. It is the energy that sustains all life. Reiki was developed in 1922 by a Japanese innovator, Mikao Usui. The system for connecting to this energy was brought to the United States in 1938 by a woman, named Hawayo Takata, who was largely responsible for introducing Reiki throughout the country. Reiki’s initial purpose is for well–being of the self. Reiki practitioners are blessed by using Reiki to maintain their own well–being, while transmitting this powerful healing energy to others.

The practice of Reiki is through hands on healing using universal life energy. Reiki is suitable for everyone: healthy, sick, young, old, healing or dying. The only prerequisite is the desire to be in harmony and balance. The system of Reiki is a holistic form of energy work that promotes healing the body on all levels. Reiki is relaxing, energizing, inspiring, calming and stabilizing. The energy connection enhanced by Reiki brings peace, balance, and harmony to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual components of our being, thus promoting good health. For some, the benefits are subtle, for others, the effects are more obvious and powerful. Reiki is gentle work. It is non–intrusive, requires no exertion or strain, and cannot harm the recipient.

The system of Reiki is a complimentary modality, aiding both conventional and alternative healing methods. It is not a substitute for medical or psychological diagnosis and treatment. Qualified Reiki practitioners will always encourage consultation with licensed physicians and health care professionals for diagnosis and treatment. Reiki creates an environment within which healing becomes easier, more efficient. This is why Reiki is currently practiced in leading hospitals and clinics throughout the world. Many individual health care professionals are also incorporating Reiki into their practices.

Reiki is not massage, nor is it like hypnosis or religion, because it is not based on beliefs of the recipient or on suggestions by the practitioner. Reiki works because universal life energy exists independent of rules or belief systems. Receiving Reiki is a very simple process. The session begins by lying down on a massage table, fully clothed, closing your eyes and listening to gentle, soothing music, which helps produce a state of deep relaxation. The Reiki practitioner will gently rest their hands upon you, non intrusively, in a series of positions from the crown of the head to the feet. Each hand position is held for a few minutes and during this time healing energy will flow into you, as the energy flows most people feel warmth, heat, or tingling from the practitioner’s hands. It is usually a very relaxing experience, some people fall asleep. Other sensations may come and go, as tensions release, like a sense of floating or seeing colored lights. When the session is over, you will slowly rise at your own pace, and then be encouraged to have a few sips of water.

Most feel an improvement after each Reiki session a feeling of calm, serenity and quiet control. Occasionally, a recipient may temporarily feel worse. This is part of the healing process–although it is referred to as the healing crisis–and it is simply the short–term effect of the body releasing stored toxins, along with other feelings, emotions, or thoughts that are no longer needed. Soon, the release is completed and good feelings take over.

The cost of a Reiki session varies. The average cost for a session is $65.00. If money is an issue, most practitioners will either work at an accommodation, or refer you to another practitioner. Some Reiki Master/Teachers offer student clinics, where you can receive a session at a greatly reduced cost.

The system of Reiki can be learnt in a one day course and is taught by a qualified Reiki Master/Teacher. The system of Reiki can be learned by anyone. The system consists of three classes. In first class you learn how to access the universal energy to healing yourself and others. You will learn how to take responsibility for yourself and your life. A Reiki Teacher will connect you to the energy through an empowerment, also known as an attunement. Once you receive this you will be a channel for the universal energy for the rest of your life.

Reading or asking questions about Reiki will give you a basic idea about this system of healing, but the only true way to know Reiki is to experience it. Find a Reiki practitioner you are comfortable with and experience its benefits of peace, balance and harmony.
