Diagnosis using Acupressure

E-mail Print
The diagnosis in oriental medicine is made by
  • History taking
Most doctors will agree that 80 percent of the diagnosis is made on history alone. Hence a detailed history of onset, duration and symptoms of the illness is taken.
  • Tongue diagnosis
The colour, texture and coating of the tongue gives some hints towards the diagnosis.
  • Palpation
Feeling with the hands for temperature, tenderness, rigidity or muscle spasm completes the examination.
  • Pulse diagnosis
This is done by experts after a lot of training. The pulse is felt by three fingers, each finger representing one meridian. Thus we have three meridians on the superficial pulse on the right wrist. The pressure is then increased and the status of three more meridians is assessed by feeling the deep pulse. Similarly, the other six meridians are assessed, three superficial and three deep on the left wrist.
By using the above methods of gauging the problem, the doctor forms an impression of the patient’s condition and then proceeds to plan the treatment. The right diagnosis is hence necessary before using Acupressure in order to ensure right treatment.
