Symptoms of Appendicitis

E-mail Print
What are the signs and symptoms of the infection?
The classic symptoms of appendicitis are
  • Mild pain that starts near the belly button and gradually moves to the right side of the lower belly or abdomen. The pain grows worse with time, causing nausea and vomiting.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Occasional diarrhea.
  • Pain on movement of the abdomen as the infection gets worse and spreads beyond the appendix.
  • Fever in the later stages of appendicitis in some cases. If the infection continues, the appendix may rupture. When this occurs, there is often relief of the pain for a short while, followed by more intense but similar pain.
  • Chronic appendicitis is rare. It causes a milder pain in the right lower abdomen that may come and go.
