Hallucinogens

Hallucinogens affect a person’s perceptions, awareness and emotions. They are often called psychedelic drugs. What any one person experiences when taking a hallucinogen is nearly always different from what someone else experiences. Many kinds of experiences can occur after taking one dose of the drug, and the experiences can vary after each time the drug is taken.

The effects of a hallucinogenic drug are strongly influenced by the thoughts, environment and people who are with the user when the drug is taken. Vivid changes in color and form occur. Sometimes the user becomes disoriented and loses his sense of time, place and his identity, or has sensations of knowing and feeling what everything in life, and life itself, is all about. Emotions, past, present and future, flood the user’s mind. For some, these experiences seem to be revealing or enlightening, for others, they are frightening.

Cannabis. After alcohol and tobacco, cannabis is the most widely used drug in the world. It is a common wild plant scientifically known as Cannabis sativa that grows in almost any climate that is not too hot or too cold. It normally looks like fine green tobacco. Charas (hashish or hash) is prepared from cannabis and is taken orally in many forms. It is prepared in black ‘Golis’ roasted and loaded in cigarettes, Ganja (grass, pot, weed, marijuana [Mary Jane] ) are smoked with cigarettes

Scientists have discovered over 400 chemicals in cannabis. The main one that produces psychotic effects is THC (tetrahydro cannabinol). The amount of THC in a cannabis plant varies wit the type of plant, where it is grown. Today, a marijuana cigarette is ten times stronger than it was several years ago.

The effects of using cannabis in its various forms are–great pleasure, euphoria, erratic behavior, absentmindedness and hilarity. It impairs judgment and distorts the sense of time and space. The user usually experiences an increase in the heart rate and reddening of the eyes. Remembering things and doing hard things becomes difficult. Some users become talkative and giddy, others become quiet. Some become anxious and uncomfortable. Thoughts become unrelated, time seems to pass more slowly, and the surroundings and people may seem strange and unreal. The user may get an exaggerated sense of his ability and imagine he is a superman and try to fly off a building.

Strong doses may cause hallucinations and image distortions. Because the amount of THC in cannabis is not always the same, it is not unusual for a user to get a larger dose than expected or wanted.
