How tactful are you with your skin?

At Skin Tact - an interactive session, adolescents find that: " Good and healthy skin is a major parameter to its obvious function of beauty."

aarogya panel for the skin eventIn line with the various support group activities, aarogya.com held an interactive seminar, Skin Tact, targeting adolescents on November 30, 2000, at the YMCA at Rasta Peth in Pune. The seminar urged to address key issues as well as problems faced by teenagers regarding skin care. The seminar was attended by gals and guys from various colleges in the city.

Highlights of the seminar were a short introduction to good skin by Dermatologist Dr. Sunil Tolat; Plastic Surgeon Dr. Sudhir Sanghvi discussed the possibilities in cosmetic surgery with the help of a Slide Show. Each talk was followed by a Question-and-Answer session between the doctors and the young audience.

Lakme's demonstrationUnfortunately former model Ms. Shyamoli Varma who was also scheduled to hand-out a few tips at the session was not able to attend due to an unforeseen health problem. The two-hour long session ended with a demonstration on general makeup tips by beauticians from Lakme Saloon at Dev’s Nirman.

The seminar began with Dr. Tolat enlightening the young audience about how skin Dr.Sunil Tolat problems like acne begin. He advised his audience that it is not body oil which helps keep your skin supple, smooth and soft but hydration or moisture. So if you have dry skin, don’t worry use less soap and more water, keep areas clean and use a good moisturizer after bath, he informed.

The interactive session was the most interesting part when the youngsters could  query the doctors. The questions touched on various beauty-related topics like: What kind of shampoo and conditioner can I use? How do I get rid of persistent dandruff? Are home remedies like channa ke atta and gram dal good for my hair? What is the best way to treat white heads and black heads? What do I do when all treatment to cure acne and acne scars fail? How can I protect my skin against harmful sunlight and pollution ? How do I choose cosmetics that are right for my skin-type?

There were also two middle-aged ladies attending the session on behalf of their daughters. They couldn’t resist querying Dr. Tolat about wrinkles, stretch marks and cracked feet which the doctor answered with utmost patience.

Dr.SanghviDr. Sanghvi’s talk centered around corrective/cosmetic treatments. He introduced the various types of cosmetic surgery with the help of pre-and-post operation profiles on slides. It takes one to one-and-a-half years before the marks of surgery disappear, informed Dr. Sanghvi as the slide show progressed.

On being queried about how safe is cosmetically done cosmetic make-up, Dr. Sanghvi remarked that a dermatologist would be better placed to answer the question. But thinking that ‘I can look like Madhuri Dixit or Juhi Chawla with the help of plastic surgery’ is also a misconception, he said.

It is also essential that before the surgical treatment commences the patient should Question and Answer Session have an idea about what the doctor is going to do, he added. After the eye-opener session with both specialists, it was time for the much awaited lucky dip --the lucky fifteen from the audience won gifts and vouchers from Hallmarks, Dorabjee’s and Dev’s Nirman. The session ended with  a small note of appreciation addressed to Dr. Tolat, Dr. Sanghvi and Lakme Saloon and a reminder that aarogya.com’s Teen Club card members can avail of a number of discounts this festival season.
