Training Pets

Train Your Puppy
Aside from being a nuisance, an untrained puppy can hurt itself. You don’t want your precious puppy running out into a busy street or chewing something that could hurt it. Teaching your puppy commands will help you get control. Additionally, the time you spend together during your training sessions will help the two of you to bond.
During your first few weeks together, teach your puppy basic commands in addition to housebreaking. If you don’t want your puppy on the furniture, for example, make this clear right from the start. Say ’No!’ firmly. Correct your puppy’s behavior and then praise it.
For example, if your puppy jumps on the sofa, say ’No!’ and put it down. Once the pup is on the ground, praise it. Say ’good dog!’ Keep in mind that puppies have very short memories, so your correction must immediately follow the bad behavior. Also, it’s important to be consistent. If you’re trying to teach your puppy to stay off the furniture, everyone in the house must follow your lead. Otherwise, your puppy will become confused.
