Causes of Megaloblastic Anemia
- Deficiencies of vitamin B–12 and folic acid (most common). The deficiency could be due to decreased intake (alcoholics), increased requirements as in pregnancy and children or mal absorption from the intestine.
- Blood disorders like leukemia, myelofibrosis.
- Drugs which impair DNA metabolism e.g. 6 mercaptopurine azathioprine or folate synthesis (methotrexate).
- Fever.
- Chest pain.
- Shortness of Breath.
- Increasing tiredness.
- Abdominal swelling.
- Unusual headache.
- Any sudden weakness or loss of feeling.
- Pain that will not go away with home treatment.
- Priapism (painful erection that will not go down).
- Sudden vision change.
- It is used only in severe crises.
