The newly formed Patients’ Rights Forum has prepared a Charter of Patients’ Rights and proposed that the forums’ representatives would visit various private hospitals to ensure that the charter is followed.
At their first convention on Sunday, Dr Abhay Shukla of Jan Arogya Abhiyan, who initiated the forum, discussed its work plan. Shubhada Khilare of Janwadi Mahila Sanghatana and Vitthal Kate of the Chaitanya Hasya Mandal have agreed to raise awareness about this forum in different localities.
The convention has passed a resolution which will be forwarded to the state Health Minister Rajendra Shingane for inclusion of the Standard Charter of Patients’ Rights in the proposed rules being framed under the amended Bombay Nursing Home Registration Act.
Nearly 150 persons, including academicians, health and social activists, citizens and cultural personalities, participated in the convention presided over by founder of Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti Dr Narendra Dabholkar.
Jaya Sagade, vice principal of ILS Law College, dealt with the legal justification to protect patients rights. She pointed out that draft National Health Bill displayed on the Health Ministry website contains detailed provisions in patients’ rights.
Dr Dilip Sarda, president, Indian Medical Association–Pune, extended complete support to the Charter of Patients’ Rights.
Dr Anil Awachat, noted writer and founder of Muktangan and Dr Amar Jesani, Forum for Medical Ethics, Mumbai were also present.
