In a life–saving procedure, surgeons at the civicrun Cooper Hospital in Juhu recently operated on a 13–year–old boy who had injured his large intestine and urinary bladder after falling on a nail at home.
According to Dr Vinay Thati, Mohammed Arif came with complaints of bleeding after the nail entered his lower abdomen. “We found that the nail had injured his large intestine and bladder. There was also a danger of the infection spreading over his body,” Dr Thati said.
The doctors performed a ’Colostomy’ to divert his stool outside the body by suturing a part of the intestine to the skin. “This allows the injured area of the intestine to remain safe and clean. The injured portion will heal on its own over a period of time,” explained Dr Thati. The doctors put a catheter from the injured bladder to a bag outside for urination.
After a few weeks, the patient was examined and found to have recovered well. “We passed a coloured dye through his intestines and confirmed that it was travelling all the way to the rectum without difficulty,” he said. The diversions were removed, and the boy has been passing stool and urine normally. Arif said he would soon resume school. “I only have to come here for a dressing once in a few days,” he said.
