A 14–yearold Class 10 student in Ramanathapuram, who went to the toilet telling her teacher she had stomach pain, ended up delivering a baby there. Her classmates were shocked to find a wailing, healthy baby girl on the toilet floor. The teenager, whose father works in Dubai, stays with her mother in Ramanathapuram. She managed to conceal her pregnancy as she was plump and well–built, according to her classmates.

When district education officer Hepsiba Beulah Punitha Jayarani conducted enquiries in her school on Wednesday, the girl’s classmates said they had noticed the girl looking plumper after the summer holidays. The girl told them that she had been on a rich diet of chocolates sent by her father.

Last Friday, the girl complained of stomach pain and went to the toilet. Sources said the girl carried with her a piece of glass which she used to sever the umbilical cord. She also allegedly tried to kill the infant by hitting its head on the floor but did not succeed.

After the delivering the baby, the girl told her teacher she was having ‘heavy periods’ and sought leave. She was sent home. Some classmates who went to the toilet later heard an infant crying and informed the teachers. When they rushed there, they found the just–born baby girl.
