On the occasion of Doctor’s Day, part of the celebrations will focus on the doctor–patient relationship
Celebrating Health
Celebrated on July 1, Doctor’s Day had started in 1991 when the government had recognised July 1, the birth anniversary as well as the date of demise of famous physician, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy .

On the occasion, the Indian Medical Association has issued notices to its local branches in the country to conduct blood donation and health check–up camps.

Dr D K Shirole, member of the national working committee of the IMA says that several programmes are held by the IMA on that day. General practitioners and consultants are felicitated for their achievements on the occasion.

Dr Sharad Agharkhedkar, president of city unit of IMA, says that as part of the celebrations, focus will also be laid on the doctor–patient relationship and plans for an emergency medical services system. Dr Arun Halbe, secretary of the IMA, Pune unit, says that four doctors will be felicitated on the occasion.

"Three doctors including Dr Ramesh Dhumbre, Dr Aparna Shrotri, Dr Pradeep Diwate and Dr Ashok Dixit will be felicitated on Doctors’ Day at their homes while an official event will be held later in the week at KEM hospital," he adds.

For several doctors though, it is a day where patients offer their gratitude and support for their services. Dr Jayant Navrange, managing committee member of IMA , says that several patients remember the day and come with flowers to greet them.

Then again, Dr A K Bhatia, a radiologist, adds, "It’s a day when people acknowledge the contribution made by doctors with their commitment and dedication to the health care of the society. A doctor is the most important person when you are in need. Indian doctors have achieved great heights throughout the world, and are always given high priority aboard as well.

Nowadays doctors are so important that they are performing better then even big hospitals, only due to their dedicated service. With NABH /JCI Accreditation becoming common in India, doctors will need to update them at regular intervals to provide appropriate services."
