With its commitment to provide affordable and quality health care to people, especially those living Below Poverty Line (BPL), the Haryana government has brought 5.47 lakh BPL families under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), a health insurance scheme.

"The beneficiaries of the insurance sceme have utilised medical benefits worth Rs 22.16 crore so far. Under the scheme, BPL families are being provided free health care insurance cover up to Rs 30,000 per annum on floater basis up to five members of a family. The scheme has been implemented in the entire state," a ESI Health Care Department official said.

By implementing the scheme, Haryana has earned the distinction of being the first state in the country to extend the scope of RSBY to provide medical insurance cover to the registered building and other construction workers and their families through the Health Insurance Plan.

The insurance plan has already been implemented in Gurgaon and the entire state will soon be brought under its ambit. To broaden the scheme by bringing in more needy sections, the data of rickshaw pullers and street vendors was being compiled and evaluated so that health insurance cover could be provided to this segment of unorganised workers and their families in the state, added the official.
