Don’t ignore your lungs. This was the message spread across on the World Spirometry Day. The first ever World Spirometry Day aimed to encourage more people to get their lungs tested for early detection of diseases such as asthma, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, an umbrella term for chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Spirometry is the most accurate measure of lung health – giving patients valuable knowledge about the permanent damage they may be inflicting on their lungs.

"Like every year, even this year we are actively taking part in order to make people aware that 7% of all deaths worldwide each year are caused by preventable lung diseases. Many face a long and painful old age due to conditions that are treatable if caught early through proper tests, like spirometry," said Dr Nagendra Prasad, allergy specialist.

He further added that doctors and staff at the event will give participants free spirometry tests which will measure their lung capacity. The Bengaluru Allergy Centre hosted the free event at #1/2, 1st Cross, Mission Road.
