On Sunday, the World Polio Day, India had something to cheer about. The country has reported "record low" polio cases in 2010 – 39 as against 498 last year.

UP, which accounted for most of the new polio cases in the past few years, has reported only 10 cases this year as against 397 last year. The state, in fact, has not reported a single case of virulent P1 since November 2009. Bihar has reported only 9 cases, three of them P1, as against 90 in 2009.

The number of new P1 cases across the country came down to 16 as against 67 last year, while the number of P3 cases declined sharply from 432 to 23.
