A rise in the number of gastroenteritis and other water–borne diseases has been reported from the city with the onset of summer.

The most recent was the death of Nirav Rathod (5), a resident of Anand Nagar in Sagrampura, who reportedly died of gastroenteritis at the New Civil Hospital on Sunday. He was admitted the same day after he complained of vomiting and diarrhoea.

Hospital sources said, on an average 20 to 25 patients suffering from some form of gastric disease are turning up in the government hospitals daily in the last four days. Surat Municipal Corporation has also taken up the distribution of chlorine tablets in different pats of the city.

A few days ago, 16 gastric–cases were reported from Ramkrupa Society in the Varachha area. The officials had sent the water samples from the area for analysis.

SMC Medical Officer Dr Hemant Desai said, “Rise in gastro cases is not unusual in this season. We are carrying out a public awareness drive in the city and have advised people to take precautionary steps. We are also organising medical camps in different wards.”
