Time is Cruel in EmergenciesTime is Cruel in Emergencies
Nine–year–old Manoj fell down while riding a bicycle and fractured his elbow accompanied with severe vascular injury. He was treated at the Jeevani Healthcare’s Sarvodaya Hospital and is now discharged, thanks to timely medical intervention. According to hospital CEO Dr K Niroop, Manoj was brought into the casualty ward after a fall. He and an open wound on the elbow and a supra condoler fracture of the humorous with tear of the brachial artery and the median nerve stretched.

A team of doctors comprising of orthopaedic, vascular surgeons operated on Manoj for four hours. First they established circulation by passing an infant feeding tube from one cut end of the artery to the other so that the limb remained viable. After this, the bones were fixed in normal position and the vascular team harvested a vein graft simultaneously with surgery on the elbow. After fixing the bones, the vascular surgeons did a venous graft and at the end of the surgery, the limb was viable and circulation returned.

At present, Manoj is discharged and with plaster on his leg expected to be removed in next three weeks, he will start on physiotherapy soon.

“Timely surgical intervention in the golden hour of trauma saved his life. Even if it was delayed by an hour it could have been life threatening. If the blood circulation was not restored immediately, he would have lost his limb and profuse blood loss from the vital arteries could have been life threatening too,” said Niroop.
