THE family of Kanchan Chandra, who underwent a surgery at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital after doctors found a pair of forceps in her abdomen, is planning to sue the hospital for medical negligence.

Kanchan’s husband Harish said, “We have lodged a complaint at the Hari Nagar police station, but the cops are not acting on it. Moreover, the hospital authorities have not provided us her medical records and X–rays despite repeated requests.”

The victim was admitted to the hospital on February 2 after she accidentally swallowed a safety pin. Besides the pin, the X–ray also revealed the presence of a pair of forceps.

The family claimed it was left behind in Kanchan’s abdomen after she underwent Caesarean section in 2005 a the same hospital.

The suspicion gre stronger after the doctors re fused to hand over Kanchan’ medical records. “We hav been demanding the record from the very first day an purely for the patient’s sake What if there are complications tomorrow? The hospi tal has given us only a dis charge sheet,” Harish said.

The doctors, howeve maintained the forceps di not cause Kanchan any injur since she was obese. The for ceps were lodged in th mesentery, the layer in th abdominal cavity that sup ports the small intestine.

The family is currentl consulting lawyers, Haris said. “With no assistance ei ther from the government o the police, we have to consu a lawyer. That is our last re sort,” he added.
