MAN OF MEDICINE: Dr KM Cherian, founder chairman of Frontier Life Line Hospital at a press conference in Chennai For decades, cardiologists across the world have been arguing that clearing blocks with balloons inserted through arteries is just as effective as the bypass operations that cardio–thoracic surgeons do.
In late October, when Chennai hosts a three–day World Congress of the World Society of Cardio–Thoracic Surgeons, the stage will be set for a debate by experts on this issue based on studies that have been done and followed for s evera years. The conference, to be jointly hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Fontier Lifeline Hospitals from October 23 to 25 at the Chennai Trade Centre, will see the participation of more than 2,000 delegates, including those from the US, UK and Australia.
Along with the world congress, the 6th global forum in humanitarian medicine in cardiology and cardiac surgery will also be held, with the former US vice–president Al Gore delivering the key thematic address. While president Prathiba Patel is expected to inaugurate the congress, chief minister M Karunanidhi will be the chief guest, Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and TN health minister MRK Panneerselvam will also participate.
“For several years now, doctors have been wondering if patients should undergo surgery or be posted for the balloon procedure, called angioplasty. There have been several trials held across the globe to find an answer and this has been one of the hottest debates among doctors. We want to see if we can arrive at conclusions,”said cardiac–surgeon Dr K M Cherian, who is also the chairman of the congress.
Besides these, the participating doctors will also speak about advancements in heart–lung transplants and the advantages of beating heart surgery over conventional coronary artery bypass graft.
“There are also other procedures like the AWAKE surgery, where the patients are kept awake with epidural anesthesia throughout the surgery ”. Neurosurgeon Dr E S Krishnamoorthy, convenor, Health Panel, CII–Tamil Nadu and honorary secretary, said the congress hopes to create societal awareness besides deliberating on business opportunities that arise out of advanced medicine
