FOR years, Lankabai Phadtare, of Solapur, had a tumour on the left side of her neck. The tumour kept growing in size causing untold hardship to Phadtare (now 65).

She visited the civic–run YCM hospital in Pimpri where a few days back a team of doctors, led by Dr Yeshwant Ingale, removed the tumour weighing 1.8 kg and measuring 12 X 6 inches.

After the surgery that removed the tumour occupying the face and neck, Phadtare was able to return home last week. "I am a much relieved person now. I was carrying this burden for years," said Phadtare.

Dr Yeshwant Ingale, chief of the dental department of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, said Phadtare had a cancerous growth on the left side of her face/neck, starting from the ear to the shoulder, measuring six inches in width and 16 inches in length. She had contacted several private hospitals which had refused to conduct the surgery owing to her age. "The tumour was increasing in size and, considering her age, we decided to remove it surgically. The operation took around eight hours," he said.

YCMH medical superintendent Dr Anand Jagdale for two years, the patient was having discomfort due to swelling. "She found it difficult to perform her day–to–day activities and even faced embarrassment in society," he said.

Dr Ingale said when the patient reported to the OPD, swelling had "lobulated growth and there was discharge from the mass." He said she had a history of similar type of mass on the 'preauricural region' which was operated at private hospital two years ago, since then mass reappeared and was growing rapidly.

"The patient was thoroughly investigated and considering the age and metastatic potential of the lesion, palliative surgical procedure of the lesion was planned," he said.

The surgical team also comprised Dr Amod Yadav and Dr Nilesh Patil. Dr Rashmi Dubey gave anesthesia to this patient during the operation. "The dental department of YCM Hospital has been performing many surgeries of pathologies of maxillofacial region which are uncommon and very rare. The present case is one of the rarest reported reported as salivary gland tumor of this size," said Dr Jagdale. "The operation cost her just Rs 8,000 while a private hospital would have charged her much more," he added.

He said in road traffic accidents and alleged assaults, trauma to facial bones is very common. "Difficult and expensive operations are performed efficiently at minimal cost in YCM Hospital," he added.
