With the first bypass surgery of a BPL patient, Gulab Devi (70), in Jodhpur on Sunday, a milestone was set up in the medical history of western Rajasthan. The surgery was done by the leading cardio-surgeon of the country, Naresh Trehan of the Medanta Medicity of Gurgaon, with which the state government has entered into an agreement for administration of the heart surgeries like valve surgery, pediatric surgery and vascular surgery besides bypass.

Chief minister Ashok Gehlot inaugurated the newly constructed three-storey cardio thoracic centre in MDM Hospital on Sunday during his brief visit to the city. It has been set up at a cost of Rs 8.96 crore and took three years to be complete. While addressing a gathering at the S N Medical College auditorium after the inaugural, Gehlot praised Trehan for his contribution. He has been instrumental in beginning bypass surgeries in Jaipur and Bikaner. Jopdhpur is the third district.

Gehlot reiterated his intention to improve health facilities in the state. He said commencement of the bypass surgery is a major achievement towards this, which will do away with the compulsion of the people of this part of the state to go to other destinations for this expensive surgery.
