Unlike Bone Marrow Derivation, It Is Cheaper
Instead of a botox injection or artificial fillers for cosmetic procedures, Mumbaikars will now have an option of filling up their own regenerative fat tissues when it comes to cosmetic procedures. The technique can be used to treat not only soft tissue defects but also ischemic conditions.

Forget Botox Injections, You Can Now Get Stem Cells From Your Own Body Fat
Elixir Hospital in Dadar, which is a 10–bedded ambulatory care surgery set–up and concentrates on minimally invasive surgeries, has launched a regenerative medicine centre, where patients can get stem cells from body fat instead of bone marrow.

”The procedure can be used to increase the volume of tissues in breasts, buttocks, forearms, calf muscles and the face,” said Dr Satish Arolkar, a cosmetic surgeon associated with the hospital.
However, apart from cosmetic procedures, the therapy can also be used for other ischemic conditions—local anemia in a given part of a body sometimes resulting from congestion.

”Cell–enriched fat grafting is the process of enriching the patient’s fat tissue with their own stem and regenerative cells for use in various procedures. Fat is taken from the patient’s stomach, hips, thighs or other areas by liposuction. Some tissue is used to extract the patient’s stem and regenerative cells, which occur naturally inside the tissue. The extracted cells are then combined with some of the patient’s own fat tissue, which forms a cellenriched fat graft that is injected into the desired area,” said Dr Arolker, adding that the therapy can also be used for other serious conditions or surgeries on knee joints, pulmonary fibrosis, tightening a vagina which loosens with age, increasing the diameter of the penis and bladder incontinence.

”Driving stem cells from fat tissues has advantages. It can be taken from anywhere in the body and used anywhere. The procedure is painless, unlike bone marrow stem cell derivation, and is cheaper,” said Rohit Nand, principal consultant of Cyotri, the company behind the technique. ”Also, the number of stem cells that can be taken from adipose tissues are 2,000 to 2,005 times more than stem cells taken from the bone marrow,” he added.

Ten patients across three cities in the country have undergone the procedures for breast augmentation to radiation necrosis––a structural lesion that usually occurs at the original tumour site, is a potential longterm central nervous system complication of radiotherapy.
