Gynaecologist Pankaj Sarode has introduced the BiClamp hysterectomy in Pune, which does not require abdominal incisions
Two months before her daughter’s wedding, 46–year–old widow Lakshmi Patil was detected with fibroids in her uterus. However, thanks to the BiClamp hysterectomy, she was cured and was able to move around the same day.

Patil said, "I had to arrange everything for my daughter’s wedding and needed to be absolutely fit. I was reluctant to undergo endoscopy as the recovery takes a long time. Then I came to know about Dr Sarode. I was fit within a week after the operation."

BiClamp vaginal hysterectomy is done using bipolar coagulation forceps and can treat fibroids in the uterus or non–treatable bleeding problems sparing the abdomen of incisions. The machine used is called the Erbe VIO300D.

Gynaecologist Dr Pankaj Sarode who owns Maher Hospital in Wakad went to Germany in October last year where he underwent training at the University of Tubiengen for this specific kind of surgery. After coming back to Pune, he introduced the BiClamp hysterectomy and has till date operated on 22 patients.

"Speaking to Pune Mirror, Sarode said, "In the past, the operation used to be done abdominally – what is known as abdominal hysterectomy. In the last twenty years, endoscopy came into the picture in which operation is performed laproscopically by making tiny holes in the abdomen. However, in the both these process, incisions are done on the abdomen. BiClamp hysterectomy is performed vaginally and this leaves the abdomen free of incisions."

Dr Charuchandra Joshi, President of the Pune Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society (POGS) said, "In the abdominal hysterectomy, a patient needs to admitted in hospital for almost a week and recovery takes over six weeks. For an endoscopy, the patient need to admitted for more than 48 hours and recovery takes almost three weeks. BiClamp hysterectomy is painless.

The patient is able to move within five hours after the operation and is completely recovered within five days. This operation is cheaper compared to endoscopy, painless and the patients don’t end up paying an enormous amount to the hospitals," he added.
