Tata Memorial Hospital (TMC) signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday with King’s Integrated Cancer Centre, London, for better cancer research.

The collaboration will focus on addressing the issue of delivering affordable cancer care to the ageing global population.

"This is a historic moment for both institutions and formalises a relationship forged within a relatively short period of two years. Both institutes are united by a common vision of improving patient care in both countries and addressing distinct spectra of cancers," said Rajendra Badwe, medical director of TMC.

The agreement will allow the two centres to pursue joint research and development and exchange of staff and students.

The institutions will focus on training fellowships, exchange visits, cancers of the breast, lung, head and neck, clinical trials, cancer policy, economics, epidemiology and public health programmes.

"The approach of TMC and India to tackling cancer against a very different and complex healthcare background has much to offer high income countries which are challenged to deliver affordable cancer care. Bringing together scientists and clinicians from all over the world who are leaders in their fields means we will really be able to drive innovation and improve cancer outcomes for our patients," said professor Arnie Purushotham, director of King’s Integrated Cancer Centre.
