IDF Multidisciplinary Diabetes Care Education Programme
IDF is pleased to announce the opportunity for member associations/local health professionals to host the IDF Multidisciplinary Diabetes Care Education Programme. The programme is based on the IDF Curriculum for Diabetes Health Professional Education (2002), and will provide participants with a Certificate of Attendance.
The programme aims to
- Enhance knowledge and skills of the health professional in diabetes education and management.
- increase the standing of the health professional in the health-care community.
- Increase respect for the role of the diabetes educator as a legitimate autonomous area of practice with a strong collaborative team basis.
Target Audience
Healthcare professionals such as primary care physicians, nurses, dietitians, social workers, psychologists, and podiatrists would benefit from attending such a programme.
Requirements for entry
Participants should have a professional degree, an interest in diabetes management and at least one year of practice in their profession.
Recognition to be gained
A Certificate of Attendance at the IDF Multidisciplinary Diabetes Care Education Programme will be awarded upon successful completion of the programme.
Number of students
This will depend on the host country, but the maximum number of students in any interactive workshop should not exceed 40.
Process and coordination
A country or contact wishing to host an IDF Multidisciplinary Diabetes Care Education Programme must undertake the following process:
- Apply to the Chair of the IDF Consultative Section on Diabetes Education to ensure availability of at least two members for the faculty. The remaining faculty will be comprised of local health professionals.
- Fund the programme in its entirety, including the cost of bringing in participants and the faculty.
- Coordinate all logistics, including travel for participants and faculty, hotel accommodation, meals, airport transfer, teaching facilities and AV, invitation and registration of participants, printing of handout material and certificates.
The academic coordination will be undertaken by specified members of the DECS faculty.
Length and description of the programme
The programme will be completed in three parts.
Part 1
A 5-day course consisting of lectures and small group work comprising a total of 28.75 contact hours.
Time allocated to lectures = 16.5 hours
Time allotted to small group, role play, practice = 12.25 hours
Part 2
Participants will complete a project over the next 12 months that has been selected by the participant and approved by the tutor/mentor. IDF faculty will act as mentors over the time, and make themselves available for advice and suggestions via e-mail.
Part 3
A 3-day advanced course and reporting of the project work completed.
Hours = 19.25
Time allotted to lecture = 11 hours
Time allotted to small group, role play etc. = 8.25
