Bariatric Surgery – Is it worth it?
To first answer the above question, many people still wonder “What does bariatric mean?” Bariatric refers to the branch of medicine that deals with the treatment of obesity. And, is it worth it? Our patients think so. As their weight comes off, they may no longer need insulin or diabinese for their diabetes, they may no longer need their blood pressure medicine. Every month there is a noticeable difference in their appearance. Tummies, legs and arms shrink down. Ankles reemerge. Wedding bands once again fit. Necklines reappear and faces lose that rounded cushion of fat.

With these physical changes come the most amazing personality changes. Patients overcome feelings of worthlessness. They are more aware of what causes the distress and are willing to work out these problems. No one makes fun of them anymore. The true miracle is that if you meet these people for the first time today, they would seem unremarkable. If you didn’t know they had been severely obese, you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart from any other person. And that’s what makes it worth they want to be treated like everyone else.

Conclusion
There is need for more research in the field of obesity. Until a time when a less invasive, effective, nonsurgical treatment is available, surgery offers the only long term control of obesity. Surgery should not be considered as the last resort because at this time it is the only effective resort in treating severe obesity (>75 lbs).
