'Sanvedana' - Activities from April 2005 to March 2006

  • First epileptic patients used to be frightened about the ‘brain surgery’. But when they saw the examples of successful brain surgeries, they started thinking about that. In Sanvedana Foundation’s counseling centre, so many patients got counseled about the surgery. More than 50 patients went through the test required for surgery, and 25 patients got operated in Tiruvananthapuram successfully.  Of course they knew that every patient’s surgery is not possible.
  • Sanvedana Foundation arranged three lectures of Dr Ulhas Luktuke (Psychiatrist) about ‘Stress Management’ for epileptic patients and their parents, continuously for three months. Dr Luktuke not only gave the lectures but also arranged some interesting games and puzzles. Dr. Luktuke taught few things through the stories as well

  • Dr Anil Awachat was invited to interact with Sanvedana members. He spoke about the Hobbies. At the same time he taught them origami; a paper fold art, to the members.

  • This year, the biggest activity of Sanvedana Foundation was about ‘The Marriage’. Arranging a marriage and having successful married life is a very big problem for epileptic patients, even if the patient’s seizures are controlled by medicines, or the patient is cured by operation. This leads to depression fro the epileptic patients. Sanvedana arranged a program to bring awareness & change the view of the society to look at the person suffering with epilepsy as a normal person! Sanvedana arranged a work-shop of the members and their parents. The chief guests were Mrs. Gauri Kanetkar (Director of Anuroop Marriage Burro), Mrs. Vandana Kulkarni (Director of Sath Sath Marriage Burro and Marriage Counseling Centre), and Dr. Maya Tulapule (Director of Shweta Association, which works for people suffering with leukoderma.). Three of them shared their very good experiences:
    1. How people want to hide their abnormalities before marriage and how bad it is.
    2. If you share the every good and bad thing in your life with your partner before marriage, the partner could be rejecting you, but also it could be a start of good married life.
    3. As any normal person can also get any disease after marriage. That’s why society has to accept the little abnormality as well.
  • Mr. Phatak, one of the parent in Sanvedana Foundation formed a new marriage burro which is specially for epileptic patients and other handicapped people as well. More than 40 epileptic patients filled the forms of this new marriage burro.
  • One of the meetings of Sanvedana Foundation was arranged for the songs and poems. Sanvedana always encourages the members for hobbies, but co-incidentally most of the members like singing and some of them do poems very well.
  • The memorable day for Sanvedana members was 20th Feb 2006. It was a pleasant morning, when 40 members of Sanvedana Foundation started from Pune to Pen, near Panvel, in a beautiful farm house for a trip. At the same time 60 members of Mumbai’s Samman Epilepsy Support Group’s members started from Mumbai to Pen. ‘Samman’ is the Mumbai chapter of ‘Indian Epilepsy Association’. So this was the get together of Mumbai and Pune support groups, as a new horizon. All the members enjoyed a lot. First they started by sharing and telling each other about their activities, about coping up with the disease. They played lot of funny games, they danced they sang as well.  This was really a wonderful and non-forgettable day for Sanvedana Foundation.
