Activities from April 2007 to March 2008 |

- From 8th July to 12th July, Radhika Deshpande and Yashoda Wakankar, the Trustees and co-ordinators of Sanvedana Foundation attended the 27th International Epilepsy Congress, organized by International League against Epilepsy (ILAE), and International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), which was held in Singapore. Both of them got a very good experience with doctors, social workers and some patients in this field from all over the world.
- Yashoda and Radhika also attended the Symposium for People with Epilepsy and their Carers. It was a one day session on 7th July 2007. In this session all the people living with epilepsy and their parents were permitted to attend. Yashoda as a recovered patient and Radhika as a parent shared their experiences as well. This was arranged by Singapore Epilepsy Foundation.
- This year the progress of Sanvedana Foundation’s marriage bureau is very good. One article about ‘The marriage and epilepsy’, written by Yashoda Wakankar was published in the famous Marathi news paper ‘Sakal’. And got tremendous response from all over Maharashtra. To be precise, not only from Maharashtra but also from Marathi people settled in the other states, who read the article online. I am honoured to write that up till now 5 couples has got married, living with epilepsy. Few more couples are engaged and they will get married this year.
- Art and Epilepsy: Sanvedana Foundation arranged the session on Art and Epilepsy, i.e. how art helps to come out of epilepsy, or how the person with epilepsy is more likely to be an artist. Yashoda wrote an article on this subject in news paper. She wrote about an Australian man who suddenly became an artist when he got affected with epilepsy. She also wrote about the other artists in history, who were living with epilepsy.
- On 2nd Sept 2007 a big program was arranged for the inauguration of Indian Epilepsy Association’s Pune Chapter. Dr Nandan Yardi is the chair person. All the members of Sanvedana Foundation got an opportunity to attend this function. As a representative of Sanvedana Foundation, Yashoda spoke about the activities for 10 minutes. That day a film on epilepsy made by the students in film institute was presented, which was really good to spread out the message.
- On 4th October 2007, 15 members of Sanvedana Foundation attended the National Epilepsy Conference held in Mumbai arranged by Indian Epilepsy Association, and Indian Epilepsy Society. All the members could meet the other epilepsy self help group from all over India, could discuss with them. And we heard the speeches of expertise in this field regarding epilepsy.
- On 17th November, the National Epilepsy Day, we were invited to Bharati Hospital to speak about epilepsy, in front of the patients from rural area. The drawing competition was also held for the children.
- Bharati Hospital’s pediatric ward’s H.O.D. invited Yashoda Wakankar and Radhika Deshpande on every month’s 2nd Friday, to speak with parents of epileptic children. This hospital is little outskirts of Pune, so generally the people from that side of rural area visit here. They have so many myths about epilepsy in their mind, which affects the growth of their child. These group sessions are helpful for the parents to come out of the shadow.
- Sanvedana Foundation got an invitation from Schizophrenia Awareness Association for the workshop arranged for self help groups. The representative of 12 SHGs were present there. All of them represented a speech about their group, and told about the kind of problems they get while running the support group and how they coup up with the problems.
- The lecture about Pranayam was arranged for all the patients and parents. Mrs Bhate, the student of well-known Ramdevji Maharaj spoke about pranayam, and how the pranayam helps to coup up with epilepsy.
- Dr Rajas Deshpande, a famous Neurologist was invited to our monthly meeting. Patients and parents asked him so many questions about epilepsy, and he explained us very nicely and honestly. Dr Deshpande not only told us only about epilepsy, but also spoke about how we have to be a very good human being first.
