For the first time in the country, doctors at a Hyderabad hospital harvested organs from a four–day–old baby girl on Tuesday, making the infant, whose heart valves and eyes were retrieved, the country’s youngest organ donor ever.

The child was prematurely born to a Hyderabad–based couple, school teacher Hymavathi and revenue inspector Kishore Kumar, on July 8. Although the infant was normal for two days, she suddenly developed complications and was put on ventilator support. In fact, doctors had informed the parents that the chances of her survival were slim. The child was declared brain dead on July 12.
