With a view to increasing job opportunities for the differently–abled, the state government would request companies with which it is entering into agreements for industrial projects to give priority in job appointments to the differently–abled persons, chief minister M Karunanidhi informed the assembly on Wednesday.
Moving the demands for grants for the department for the welfare of the differentlyabled, he said, “Whenever a memorandum of understanding is signed with industrialists/entrepreneurs, a request will be made to give priority to the differently–abled persons in employment.”
For its part, the government had ordered that differentlyabled employees working in various government departments on consolidated pay for more than two years should be brought under regular time scale of pay.
Claiming that the state was determined to implement the policy of reserving 3% of government jobs for differentlyabled persons effectively, he said a high level committee has been constituted to monitor implementation of the policy. The reservation covered government departments, PSUs, educational institutions, whether they are government–owned, aided or run by local bodies.
In the education department, 2% of teaching posts have been reserved for the visually impaired and 2% of nonteaching posts for hearing–impaired persons, Karunanidhi said. The chief minister recently created a department for the welfare of the differently abled and brought it under his own charge.
The department has formulated an action plan for a special recruitment drive to monitor and ensure filling up of the backlog vacancies identified for the differently abled, he said. Instructions have been given to appointing authorities to ensure implementation of the 3% quota, collect information about backlog of reserved vacancies and to report the vacancy position to the recruiting agencies such as Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, teachers’ recruitment board and department of employment and training.
