Nearly Size Of Month–Old Baby
When 30–year–old Bhavani walked into Dr Malathi Manipal Hospital complaining of severe ache in her lower abdomen, she couldn’t have imagined what was in store. Bhavani was shocked when she was informed that she had an 8–kg fibroid in her abdomen, nearly the size of a month–old baby!

“We found an irregular mass on her left side, extending from the pelvic cavity to the coastal margin and the surface also seemed irregular due to multiple fibroids,” said Kishore C Kumtakar, gynaecologist, who performed the surgery.

Doctors suggested Bhavani to undergo abdominal myomectomy, a procedure where the mass is removed from the uterus, without causing harm to any organ. “The operation was performed under combined spinal and epidural anaesthesia and the abdomen was opened in layers. A multiple fibroid, weighing about eight kg, was removed,” he said. “The uterus had to be reconstructed and ovaries were retained as normal,” the doctor explained. Bhavani was discharged from the hospital 10 days after the surgery. “What’s amazing about this surgery was that the patient (Bhavani) can conceive again,” added Kumatkar.
