Prominent ENT specialist of Dimapur Dr. Sunil Sethi successfully conducted a critical ’multi–surgical’ procedure involving the ear, nose and throat, on Thursday, August 12 at Metro Hospital, Dimapur.
According to Dr. Sethi it was the first combined ’ear, nose and throat’ operation, performed by a doctor single–handedly for the first time in the entire north–east, that too free of cost. Aside from him only an anesthetist was involved.
The doctor disclosed over phone the successful conduct of the operation Thursday evening.
The patient was identified by a relative only as Abenla from Mongsenyimti village under Mokokchung district, in the general ward of the hospital. Forty–five years old, she was suffering from a number of ailments affecting her right ear, sinus and throat for the last seven to eight years.
As a result the patient was having difficulty swallowing food and water, loss of hearing, headache and a runny nose. She also had a past history of a fish bone stuck in her tonsils, Dr. Sethi said.
The surgery lasted three hours and involved ’Adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy, fish bone removal from the tonsils, Endoscopic Myringotomy with grommet insertion in the right ear to restore hearing loss; Endoscopic r.f. Turbinectomy; and Bilateral Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery’.
All these was done free of cost, Dr. Sethi said. The patient’s family only has to foot the bills for the post–operative care and other medications. Normally such an operation would cost around Rs. one lakh, he added. "Today was my birthday… I wanted to do some charity work", Dr. Sethi said.
The patient was admitted to Metro Hospital Wednesday evening and the surgery was performed Thursday at around 10:00 am. Dr. Sethi said she will be discharged on Friday and was hopeful she will fully recover in two to three weeks.
Metro Hospital also did not charge any money for the stay in the hospital, Dr. Sethi added. The relative attending to the patient said the family is very grateful to the kind gesture of Dr. Sethi as well as Metro Hospital. They were running out of money after coming to Dimapur from their village about two months ago, seeking medical help.
