The state’s health programme Varumun Kappom has benefited more than 1.4 crore people so far. As many as 15,000 camps have taken place across the state, while medicines worth Rs 28.4 crore were distributed free–of–cost, according to mayor M Subramanian.
Inaugurating a camp at Chennai Higher Secondary School in R V Nagar in Jafferkhanpet, he said the municipal corporation has held a record 127 camps, benefiting three lakh people. At the camps, patients are screened for anaemia, vitamin deficiencies, fever, diabetes, heart diseases, cervical cancer, breast cancer, malaria, tuberculosis, ear, nose and throat diseases and treated by the Chennai Corporation. Since the free ambulance service was introduced, the number of calls received by the health department is increasing.
