This will be a big relief for those born with club foot. CURE International India Trust has launched a CURE Club Foot in Karnataka to treat children born with the deformity.
Club foot is a condition where the foot is rotated internally at the ankle. In India, 40,000 to 50,000 children are born every year with club foot. Of this, 2,500 are in Karnataka.
The programme will offer free treatment to the children. A weekly clinic will be held at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, Victoria Hospital, St John’s Hospital and Sparsh.
The Cure International India Trust signed an MoU with the government. As per this, they will offer training to orthopaedic doctors on Ponseti method. Detailed medical records of students will be maintained, there’ll counsellors to work with parents to help them understand the condition and free braces will also be given.
"In developed countries, the treatment is a part of delivery. But here many cases are neglected. If not treated, it becomes a disability and many turn out to be unproductive," said Dr Santosh George, manager of the India branch of CURE International.
For the treatment, Ponseti method is followed which is a manipulative technique. Plaster cast is put in the initial stages and later braces are used.
