A J Hospital and Research Centre, Mangalore has launched an advanced version of MRI and cath lab. The new digital flat panel cath lab is a first of its kind, with improved features for cardiac investigation and intervention.

It has additional software support and produces quality images that help cardiologists in performing complex procedures, said Prashanth Marla, director of the hospital, on Monday.

The magnetic resonance imaging device, a high field 1.5 Tesla, 18 channel, supercon system with total imaging matrix, comes fully loaded with neurology, ortho, cardiac, oncology, body, angiogram, paediatric and breast suites. The advanced machine is capable of head-to-toe imaging in a very short time.

MRI allows for spectroscopic studies which help in better characterization of tumours and malignancies as well as diagnosing neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis).

These machines have been imported from Siemens, Germany. In addition to the above, a cancer therapy unit with advanced linear accelerator facility will be installed in a few months.
