Dean Foundation, a charitable trust working in the area of hospice and palliative care, launched a paediatric palliative care centre at the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children in Egmore recently.
The trust will be allotted beds in the hospital and doctors and nurses will attend on patients admitted there. The trust will take care of counselling and other forms of palliative care. The trust will also develop assessment tools, medication protocols, demographic information, and information about grief and its management, bereavement issues and spiritual issues.
“Although a number of successful adult programmes in pain and palliative care exist, integrated paediatric pain and palliative care services are rare. There are no statistics about the number of children who need palliative care in India. The US has over 53,000 children who get palliative care,”said Dean Foundation founder Deepa Muthiya.
The foundation, she said, will focus on good quality of life for the child; provide a ‘whole person’ approach considering the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs; enable a family-centred approach involving family members in palliative care; and allow flexibility giving the family a choice to receive care in a way that best meets their needs.
