Tension prevailed at the Government General Hospital (GGH) here on Monday when relatives of an accident victim ransacked the casualty room and attacked the hospital staff for their ‘negligence’ in attending to the patient, who later died.
The protests continued for nearly an hour as angry villagers broke glass windowpanes and damaged furniture. The hospital staff ran for cover as the protesters went berserk. The agitators did not relent even after the medical officers tried to pacify them, alleging that the doctors’ negligence had claimed the life of their relative.
The situation was brought under control after the police rushed to the GGH and took the protesters into custody. According to police, S Paul, 48, of Kundurthi village in Santhamagulur mandal of Prakasam district suffered serious injuries in a car-lorry collision at Rajupalem village at around 7 am. Locals rushed him to the GGH by 9 am.
Relatives and friends from Kundurthi reached the hospital by 11 am and were aghast to find no doctor attending on Paul. It took nearly two hours for them to convince a doctor to attend on Paul but an hour later, Paul breathed his last. The news of Paul’s death triggered angry protests from the locals and relatives who resorted to the violence.
“My brother did not die in the accident. He was killed by the doctors,” a furious Moshe shouted. Villager Jakraiah said none of the doctors took the case seriously.
