Sion hospital case: Initial probe hints at negligence
The preliminary findings in the case at Sion Hospital where a semi–conscious patient was mistakenly taken as dead on Wednesday, has indicated that there was some negligence. Following this, the civic body has called for a full–fledged inquiry into the incident.
On Wednesday, Mahadev Upar (45) was mistaken for dead and was about to be taken to the mortuary by the staffers. It was actually Motiram Shelar, occupant of the bed next to Upar, who had expired an hour ago. “We have asked for an inquiry,’’ said additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar. She said the preliminary inquiry report has already been handed over to her.
Mhaiskar said the report has recommended certain changes in the existing procedure of declaring a patient dead. One of the recommendations is doctors should mandatorily identify the dead patient before carrying out further procedure, she said.
Meanwhile, a blame game has already begun at the hospital with the ward boys alleging that doctors and nurses should be primarily held for any negligence. The hospital staff has also alleging that Upar’s relatives have distorted the facts. Sion hospital dean, Dr Sandhya Kamath, said an investigation will be conducted.
