A RARE laparoscopic ovarian cyst surgery was performed on a fourmonth pregnant woman at LTMG Hospital in Sion. According to experts, this is the first of its kind surgery in India, where the foetus has been saved.
Dr Niranjan Chavan, HOD Obstetrics and Gynecology at LTMG Hospital, said, "We could not remove the ovary, as we wanted to preserve the pregnancy. An open surgery would have had other post operative complication, besides being a grueling exercise for the woman."
Doctors say the 25–year–old patient complained of abdominal pain, and after investigations doctors detected a 7–month–old large benign tumour in her left ovary.
"If not treated, the tumour’s weight would have led to miscarriage or a stillborn delivery," said Dr Chavan.
Immediately after the operation on August 31, an ultrasound was performed to check the foetus. A fortnight later, investigation showed her pregnancy is perfectly normal," said Dr Chavan. According to doctors, this surgery has been performed twice before in Japan wherein the baby was aborted in one surgery, while the pregnancy was preserved in the second.
