The Delhi government will be setting up over a dozen new hospitals in the city within the next few years to cater to the increasing medical needs of the citizens.

At present, the national capital has 38 state–run government hospitals with 7,510 beds. The aim is to increase the number of beds to 10,000.

The decision was taken Wednesday at a high–level meeting headed by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit .

Officials said the government has decided to set up new 200–bed hospitals in Burari, Hastsal, Sarita Vihar, Chhatarpur, Ambedkar Nagar, Madipur, Jwalapuri and Bamnauli.

It has also been decided to set up 100–bed hospitals in Siraspur, Keshavpuram and Jaunti while two 50–bed hospitals have been planned at Molar Bund and Baprola.

Delhi has 2.5 beds against 1,000 people whereas the national average is 0.7.
