The International Conference of Neonatal Nurses took cognisance of her work and recognised her first International Neonatal Nursing Excellence Award last year. She saved 40,000 neonatal in last 28 years and still counting more. Rekha Samant, senior staff nurse from KEM Hospital, dedicated for new born care.

Samant is working as a nurse in the civic run hospital for last 28 years and working in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She has done her diploma in neonatal nursing, which she obtained at SNDT University in Mumbai. Samant is a national trainer in Kangaroo Mother Care.

In India, more than one million babies die in their first month of life. It happens due to ill health of mother and malnutrition of expected mother during her pregnancy period.

But Samant saves the lives of such babies successfully. "It’s is actually very challenging to take care of the neonatal baby’s health. The health of neonatal depends on various factors which affects health directly." said Samant.

Nurses have to take care of baby’s feeding, body temperature and to save the baby from any type of infection as they are sensitive.

"We have to play major role in infection control," said Samant.
Samant also explained why the baby has to face such problems and also advised that the mother should have to look after their health. "But there are many factors such as early marriages and economic issues which cause health problems." said Samant.

"Though I have been honoured by the International Institute I do feel pride about that, but I also regret that still our country is facing primary problems," she said.
