Webcam care for dementia
You can now connect with doctors to discuss dementia-related issues via web-conferencing, thanks to Tele Dementia Care, a service launched at Nightingales Centre for Ageing & Alzheimer’s (NCAA) on Sunday.
Over 3.5 million people, mostly elders, suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, the main cause of dementia. In Bangalore, more than 32,000 elders are affected, most of whom are unable to visit institutions for dementia care on a regular basis. Even those who visit institutions for initial assessment find it difficult to seek regular follow-up services, essential for dementia care.
How it’s Done
The NCAA outreach team will identify elders who need detailed assessment. After assessment at NCAA, a team equipped with a webcam-enabled laptop will visit the homes and set up a live chat between families of the patients and experts at NCAA. Caregivers will be advised on appropriate care during this virtual conference.
According to managing trustee Dr Radha Murthy, this initiative will also reach out to patients in rural areas and in nearby towns where patients are unable to avail their services.
To make this programme more effective, Nightingales is trying to get technical support from Isro.
