Introduction

The Cancer Patients Aid  Association (CPAA) was Cancer Support Group established in Pune five years ago. Cancer patients require more than just medical care that a doctor provides and the CPAA does just that. Once the patient has undergone surgery or some other therapy, there are several issues that need looking into.

Says Dolly Rizvi, Director, CPAA, "For most cancer patients who come from the villages, the problems begin after the treatment is over. Because they are poor, they cannot afford to buy even the basics, their medicines, food and so on. The CPAA helps them out in these areas.

"Besides this, the CPAA also organizes several awareness programs throughout the year. They also help make the patients feel good by organizing the National Rose Day on Sept 22, wherein cancer patients are visited by well wishers and social workers and given roses, the 'No Tobacco' day on May 31, several sporting activities and free check up camps not just in Pune but also in the surrounding villages. The CPAA also has a play group for children suffering from Leukemia at Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital.

A tumor was detected when she was in the std. V. It was a huge lump on her neck. After extensive treatment she was referred to the Inlaks Hospital by Dr. Ajay Joshi where she was treated by Dr. Shona Nag and Dr. Kopikar. Her cancer was diagnosed and the hospital helped with medicine and support.

She was helped then by CPAA. "It is a good organization, it has close relationships with it's members and a very caring attitude. We feel like a close knit family and I am so thankful to them". says Pooja's family. Now she is back at school!

Her medication started on 12/8/97 with a total of 12 doses at 1 dose per month. Blood testing every month. "I was courageous and regular with treatment which resulted in early recovery"

Play Group Activities: Drawing and painting classes. Lots of teachers visit the kids to teach them various things. Other cancer kids come to play and they organize trips, visits to gardens, outings. "We forget our sorrow and misery at the play group".
