Appendicitis Surgery Treatment

There are two main techniques in which an appendicitis surgery treatment is done – one is the traditional appendectomy surgery and the other is a newer and more advanced technique known as laparoscopy. Both surgeries are done under anesthesia, so the patient feels absolutely no pain of the surgical invasion.
The appendicitis surgery treatment by appendectomy is done by making an incision of about two to three inches in the skin of the abdominal wall near the McBurney’s Point. This skin is then gradually lifted, and the exact position of the appendix is located. The appendix is removed, and if there is any other inflammation, necessary measures are taken to remove them also. Once the appendix has been removed, the area of the large intestine, known as colon, from where the appendix has been cut off is sewn together. This is the simplest form of appendicitis surgery treatment.
Laparoscopic appendectomy is a modern appendicitis surgery treatment that does not require large incisions to be made. The surgeon uses a device known as laparoscope. The laparoscope is a small tube that contains a telescope at the end of it, and which is fitted to a video camera. The advantage of the method is that the laparoscope can be inserted into the abdominal area only through a small incision, through which the surgeon can also see the abdominal cavity on a video screen. The incisions needed are no bigger than puncture wounds.
Laparoscopy is used in a large way today because of the less postoperative care required. Also, since laparoscopy is not much an invasive method, it is used by surgeons to make proper diagnoses if they are in doubt of the appendicitis condition. In pregnant women, for example, the symptoms of appendicitis are always confused. Laparoscopy helps doctors to reach a definite conclusion and do effective appendicitis surgery treatment.
The traditional appendicitis surgery treatment is cheaper than the laparoscopic method. But because of the very short recuperation period and other benefits, laparoscopy has certainly become much more popular appendicitis surgery treatment.
