With cases of swine flue, cholera, jaundice and typhoid being gradually reported from each of the fourteen wards of the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun to gear up against any eventuality.
All the fourteen wards have been asked to keep a watch on any abnormal growth of patients of water–borne diseases in their area. All major constructions, where builders and developers have set up on site labour camps, have been asked to be specially alert over the hygiene in the area.
Pune had witnessed one of the worst swine flu situations in the state, recording the most causalities. The reasons for that outbreak have not been fully analysed yet, but what came out clearly from the whole experience was there needs to be a close coordination between private hospitals and the PMC. Neither had the ability to deal with the situation on its own
Meanwhile, the PMC has asked all citizens to strictly avoid any use of water drawn from bore wells or canal water, without first treating.
All housing societies have been asked to get their water storage tanks cleaned as soon as possible, and schools and colleges have directed to ensure that all tanker supplying them with potable water should be throughly checked before being allowed to fill up the tanks.
Acting head of the health department, Dr R R Pardeshi, has also sent directives to all private practitioners in the city to immediately report any cases of swine flue, cholera, typhoid, dengue, jaundice, diarrhoea, that they come across at their hospitals and clinics.
Meanwhile, municipal commissioner, Mahesh Zagade, has appealed to all citizens to get in touch with the health officials in their respective wards to report any health hazard that they wish to point out in the greater public good.
