Fourteen years and three rounds of litigation later, the Supreme Court on Friday ordered a telephone subscriber to pay over Rs 4.5 lakh he owed the Department of Te lecommunications in "sex talk calls".
The prolonged litigation was spurred by the phone user’s refusal to pay Rs 3,62,723 and another Rs 91,929 he owed in phone charges from January to May 1996. He claimed to have been "mischievously and unscrupulously billed for a large number of international calls".
The judgment by a Bench of Justices RV Raveendran and Dalveer Bhandari found evidence against the Managing Director of the Gujarat Co–operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd – who is not named in the judgment – to show that he was in full knowledge of the calls from a phone installed at his residence in Anand town.
